On June 22, 2026, the owner of a gay bar, referred to within the community as "Nan Jie," sent a message in the venue's staff group chat instructing all sales and reservations staff to refuse service to customers identified as "bears" — a subculture label within the gay community commonly applied to men with heavier or more muscular builds.
Screenshots of the message were subsequently shared across social media platforms, rapidly drawing criticism from within the community.
Public Response
Following the leak, numerous users on social media criticized the bar for applying a body-type-based admission policy. Several individuals who identified themselves as former patrons claimed that such refusals had occurred on prior occasions, suggesting the practice was not isolated.
After the screenshots spread, the bar owner's response in the group chat focused on identifying the source of the leak rather than addressing the policy itself. No public statement or apology was issued. A significant number of community members declared they would no longer patronize the venue, and many shared the screenshots as a warning to others.
