Study Overview
Imperial College London published research in January 2026 in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution, drawing on behavioral data from 491 non-human primate species. The study identified male same-sex behavior in 59 species, with 23 of those exhibiting it as a routine behavioral pattern.
Lead researcher Professor Vincent Savolainen noted that male same-sex behavior is broadly distributed across non-human primates and should not be considered rare. The study also observed that species living in more challenging environments or with more complex social structures tended to display such behavior more frequently.
Findings and Scientific Context
The research team proposed that male same-sex behavior may serve functions including strengthening social bonds and reducing intragroup conflict in certain species, suggesting a degree of evolutionary adaptive significance.
The findings align with earlier research in related areas: a 2019 Harvard University study identified multiple genetic loci associated with same-sex behavior in large-scale genomic samples, while a 2023 study from the University of Granada in Spain characterized male same-sex behavior in mammals as a form of convergent adaptation that helps maintain social cohesion and reduce conflict.
Scientists have previously documented same-sex behavior in more than 1,500 animal species, including penguins and giraffes.
