Cabinet Formation
The new Dutch cabinet was formally sworn in before King Willem-Alexander in The Hague on February 23. The cabinet comprises 18 ministers and 10 state secretaries, formed through negotiations among Democrats 66 (D66), the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), and the Christian Democratic Alliance (CDA).
Prime Minister Rob Jetten, born in March 1987 in Veghel, North Brabant, is both the youngest prime minister in Dutch history and the country's first openly gay head of government. He previously served as Minister for Climate and Energy from January 2022 to July 2024 and briefly held the position of Deputy Prime Minister.
Election Results and Coalition Agreement
Parliamentary elections were held in the Netherlands in October 2025. Democrats 66 and the Freedom Party each secured 26 of the 150 seats in the House of Representatives, with D66 emerging as the largest party by a margin of fewer than 30,000 votes. The VVD won 22 seats and the CDA 18 seats.
Coalition negotiations followed, concluding with a formal agreement announced on January 30.
Government Policy Priorities
Under the coalition agreement, the new government has outlined priorities including advancing housing construction and energy transition, implementing active climate policy, developing high-technology industries to strengthen the economy, tightening immigration policy, reforming social security and healthcare systems, and strengthening national security and international cooperation.
