According to the statement, Senegal enacted legislation on March 30 intensifying criminal penalties for same-sex sexual relations whilst criminalising support, advocacy, or funding for homosexual, bisexual, and transgender conduct. The French government statement emphasises the nation's commitment to universal and indivisible human rights principles, global decriminalisation of homosexuality, defence of LGBTQ+ rights, and opposition to discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Humanitarian Concerns and Diplomatic Action
France expressed full support for all individuals facing danger as a consequence of the legislation. The statement indicates France is conducting active engagement within its dialogue framework with Senegalese partners.
France's embassy and consulate general in Dakar have received individual requests of various natures and are working to respond to them. For purposes of confidentiality and safety, the government cannot provide further information regarding the nature, volume, or handling of these requests.
International Coordination and Multilateral Engagement
France indicated that the situation is also the subject of discussions with European and like-minded partner nations. This demonstrates France's active international coordination in responding to Senegal's legislation.
