The Polk County Sheriff's Office in Florida recently announced the arrest of 33-year-old Davenport resident Andre Brown Jr. on severe criminal charges. According to official police arrest reports and statements, Brown faces charges of felony aggravated child abuse and resisting arrest after investigators discovered evidence of systemic physical violence inflicted upon three children under his temporary care. Deputies uncovered the abuse following a violent incident inside the residence where a 5-year-old boy was severely assaulted, a beating the young victim later told investigators was fueled by Brown's intense anger toward him "for being gay".
The horrific domestic abuse came to light on May 3 due to the quick actions of a terrified 9-year-old girl staying in the home. Horrified by the severity of the continuous lashing delivered to the 5-year-old, the young girl sent an urgent text message to her mother, writing, "I’m scared, he’s whooping him so hard, I’m scared". The text prompted an immediate emergency report to the local Sheriff's Office. Arriving deputies discovered that while all three minors in the residence bore physical marks of abuse—with the girl showing arm contusions and another young boy presenting bruised limbs—the 5-year-old had been targeted with extreme brutality. In addition to a patterned array of lacerations and deep bruises mapping his arms, legs, back, and stomach from a belt, the 5-year-old suffered a distinct bone fracture in his right wrist alongside a significant contusion.
When deputies attempted to execute the arrest, Brown actively resisted law enforcement by shouting and attempting to pull away from the taking officers, resulting in an additional criminal charge of resisting arrest. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd strongly condemned the attack, characterizing it as a brutal, hateful, and inexcusable assault on a defenseless child. Sheriff Judd confirmed that because Brown broke the young boy's bone based purely on the belief that the child was gay, the agency would formally investigate the aggravated child abuse charge as a hate crime enhancement. This legal designation elevates the severity of the prosecution, meaning Brown could face a sentence of life in prison if found guilty of the felony charge.
Booking records confirm that Brown, who is currently married and unemployed, remains held in custody at the Polk County Jail. Background checks performed by law enforcement revealed that the suspect possesses an extensive domestic criminal history. His prior arrests include aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, burglary, battery, assault with a deadly weapon, theft, kidnapping, armed home invasion robbery, battery on a pregnant individual, driving under the influence (DUI), possession of a weapon on school grounds, domestic battery by strangulation, and dating violence. Local judicial and child advocacy entities are working jointly to ensure the surviving children receive necessary medical care, security, and psychological rehabilitation.
