Nippon Sheet Glass Co., Ltd. announced on August 5, 2026, that it had revised its human resources policies to extend benefits previously available to legally married spouses to eligible same-sex and common-law partners. The changes took effect on August 1 and are intended to create a more inclusive workplace for employees with different family arrangements.
Under the company's announcement, eligible partners include those covered by partnership certificates issued by local authorities, people married or in equivalent relationships under foreign law, and common-law partners who continuously share a household and living expenses and meet the company's criteria following an individual assessment. The revision changes the definitions of "spouse" and "marriage" in relevant company rules.
The revised policies cover marriage leave, condolence benefits, family allowances and company housing, as well as travel expenses, employee support, childcare and family-care leave, and salary-related provisions. The company also said employees can complete the process directly with its human resources department. Supervisors will not be informed without the employee's permission.
Background and analysis: Japan does not currently recognize same-sex marriage nationwide, and related legal challenges remain before the courts. A company policy change does not confer national legal recognition on same-sex marriages, but it can narrow differences in access to workplace benefits, including housing and leave. NSG's revision illustrates how employers can extend practical protections to diverse partnerships within the existing legal framework.
