Jeffrey Donaldson commanded one of Northern Ireland's most influential political positions. As leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, he maintained his parliamentary seat for nearly three decades. By early 2024, Donaldson had achieved his greatest political accomplishment—facilitating Northern Ireland's power-sharing government restoration—placing him at his career's apex. This trajectory ceased abruptly on March 28, 2024, when police arrested him at dawn. Within hours, his political edifice collapsed entirely.
Donaldson cultivated a public persona as a devout Presbyterian, exemplifying moral rectitude and religious commitment. This carefully constructed image generated substantial political capital amongst Northern Ireland's conservative electorate, facilitating his ascent to party leadership. In 2006, Donaldson delivered parliamentary remarks proclaiming that Judaism, Islam, and Christianity all teach that homosexual conduct constitutes sin. This constituted his consistent political position.
Double Life Exposure
Yet simultaneously in 2006, two senior Northern Irish detectives observed Donaldson entering "Chariots," a London gay bathhouse. This observation ultimately triggered comprehensive investigation into his personal conduct. Staff at the establishment expressed frank bewilderment during subsequent interviews: an individual who publicly condemned gay rights simultaneously frequented gay establishments privately. This apparent contradiction proved incomprehensible to many observers.
Donaldson issued no public response addressing these allegations, though court proceedings subsequently revealed substantially graver matters.
Judicial Proceedings and Conviction
On June 22, 2026, following three days' deliberation, the jury delivered its verdict: all 18 counts were upheld. The charges encompassed 23 years—from 1985 through 2008. All allegations involved sexual violence rather than merely private conduct. Donaldson stood flanked by security personnel, expressionless as he received judgment promising "extensive imprisonment."
Institutional Collapse
Donaldson's political career dismantled within weeks. Following conviction, he resigned from DUP leadership, faced party suspension, and was systematically erased from party websites. His nearly thirty-year parliamentary tenure became untenable.
In July 2026, King Charles formally rescinded Donaldson's 2016 knighthood. The original honour recognised his "service to politics." Donaldson additionally relinquished his baronetcy and privy council seat.
Institutional and Moral Dimensions
Observers emphasised that the case's significance transcended Donaldson's personal identity. The profound offence derived from his deliberate public performance as a moral authority, weaponising religious rhetoric and "traditional values" to condemn others whilst privately perpetrating unconscionable acts.
