League Commissioner Rob Manfred explained the league's policy framework in a response. He noted, "MLB's policies must be enforced uniformly, regardless of the content of the message, in order to withstand legal scrutiny. This means prohibiting both positive and negative information."
Manfred further explained, "Warning to Giants players that they cannot add Bible verses to their team caps is not about discriminating or blaming them because of their religious beliefs. Rather, it is about enforcing a long-standing rule set forth by the collective bargaining agreement that is designed to keep uniforms clean and avoid controversy." He added that the rule has been applied equally to a variety of messages, including messages to players' mothers or commemorating friends who have passed away.

In his response, Manfred also pointed out the communication flaws of the San Francisco Giants when organizing activities. He said, "Unfortunately, the Giants' communication with players this year was insufficient and unclear. Some players apparently did not understand their right to choose to wear standard uniforms and chose to add messages to their team caps."
In fact, all 26 players could have chosen to wear standard uniforms and not participate in Pride activities. Relief pitcher Sam Hentges chose this approach. "Giants players were allowed to wear caps with Bible verses for the entire game," Manfred said. "After the game, my office issued a routine verbal warning for uniform policy violations—unfortunately, this was before we realized the Giants' lack of communication. These players were neither fined nor disciplined and will not be disciplined in the future."
